Joe Kelland

Joseph Kelland is an emerging photographer and artist currently based in South Wales. His work is often created through an explorative process delving into the relationships and politics of subject matter. Where would you like your work to take you?

I would love for my work to take me onto working on a wider range of projects, especially within the world of editorial and high concept fashion work. I am often interested on working on something deeper than visuals so would love to work with queer fashion as I love the politics behind it. Having said this, I do have a lot of photographic interests and mainly just want to reach a wider audience with my work sharing stories and experiences, and as a consequence making those connections with fellow people and artists.

What do you look for when creating an image?

When creating an image I often look for a narrative. I look for a moment that is often driven by the relationship, especially when shooting with other people. I feel as though technical changes and perfecting small details can come with post production but that special moment when shooting often helps create an image that resonantes more. I would say I also look for authenticity if I aim to portray a story or narrative.

Where do you draw inspiration from?

I have my go to inspirations that are always occupying my thoughts. These include the likes of Tim Walker, Irving Penn, Collier Schorr and Ryan James Caruther. I have always admired and found inspiration in magazines. Many of my favourites include Paper Magazine, Pansy Mag and f*cking young! I then progress to investigate and research more. This can include spending time with the people I'm working with as I work quite collaboratively, and bouncing around ideas around and getting a better understanding of one another is often a great spark for ideas and inspiration.

Can you list a couple other creatives/friends/people you look to for inspiration?

A more personal list would include, An Nguyen (@phatbitch123) Martin Seeds (@martinseeds) Xuxa Kidd (@xuxa.eg) and my fellow graduates at the University of Brighton (@uobphotography)
