Megan Isaaks

Focused around ideas of sound, space, time and environment, my drawings record the audio of the Cornish landscape through abstract mark making. I am currently in my 3rd year of studying Ba(Hons) Drawing in Falmouth, Cornwall. My work with the audio-landscape stems from previous bodies of work exploring the depiction of music. Using graphic structures such as cartography grids and music scores allows me to emphasise the spatial and temporal aspects of sound. Instagram: @meg_isaaks_art

I want people to engage with my work by allowing themselves to relax into the drawings and experience the total immersion, musicality and mindfulness I feel when making my work in the landscape.

Recently I've been looking towards artists whose work touches upon music like that of Fiona Robinson and John Cage as well as Sungfeel Yung and Lee Ufan for ideas on composition and mark making.

Where would you like your work to take you?

I've never really considered where I'd like my work to take me. I would love to be able to collaborate with more musicians to interpret my scores, to walk the line between artist and composer.

Do you immerse yourself in the Cornish landscape and draw directly from it or do you record it?

Whenever I draw, I draw directly from the landscape. I've tried drawing from recordings but it's never the same, you lose the spatial aspect of the landscape. How am I to map out locations of sounds if they are all playing from one speaker?

Have you studied music before?

I've never formally studied music but have always had an affinity with it.

I play the saxophone and am currently making work by collaging my old sheet music.

Why do you find music is the best way to express yourself?

I'm drawn to music as a way of expressing myself because of how dynamic it can be. I can use it to create small sensative drawings as well as larger drawings with more marks and noise.

Can you list a couple other creatives/friends/people you look to for inspiration?

Recently I've been looking towards artists whose work touches upon music like that of Fiona Robinson and John Cage as well as Sungfeel Yung and Lee Ufan for ideas on composition and mark making.
