Moon Immisch
As an artist I enjoy keeping my photographic practice open and experimental, without forcing myself into a singular niche. I create documentary imagery that showcases the relationships & beliefs of those around me, exploring their beauty & individuality. Equally, I produce constructed narrative photography, the central point of which involves transforming reality & merging several seemingly incompatible worlds into a new universe to delight and excite the viewer. Our Silent Summer is a project I began working on last Summer, photographing my housemates. It explores the intimate moments & interesting relationship dynamics that develop when people co-exist in a small space without much physical contact with the outside world.
Where would you like your work to take you?
I hope that my work can propel me into the creative industry to a place where I am able to fund myself through creating and collaborating on projects.
This work is clearly different to your previous work - was this due to covid or was this a natural progression?
My photographic practice is very open & experimental, I enjoy creating documentary projects like Our Silent Summer as they allow me to photograph more intuitively. However, I equally enjoy more scripted projects that have more conceptual themes & draw influences from the fashion industry. I have found that my work naturally transitions from one style to another depending on my mood & what equipment I have access to at the time.
Is there an artists/photographer/book/place you continually go back to for inspiration?
Photographically, I always return to the work of Cian Oba-Smith, whose book Andover & Six Acres is one of my most prized possessions & favourite photography books.
Can you list a couple other creatives/friends/people you look to for inspiration?
While I draw inspiration from a variety of places, the people close to me are a constant source of inspiration, from the way they create art of their own & the way they see the world in all its beauty. My closest friends often feature in my work like in Our Silent Summer & I love the way my work can become a collaboration between myself & my subjects.
