Hi, I'm Jordan Ridout and I am a 22 year old student at Arts University Bournemouth studying BA Photography and I'm in my third and final year. Instagram: @iordanridout
Over these years my work has changed a lot with it being focused more on street photography as well as the landscape but due to COVID, I had to stop going outside which meant that I needed to create work in the house. This is where I created a project with myself, the camera and a cable release. Then with guidelines going up and down, I was able to take the project outside and into a studio. this is where a lot of my development for the project happened but then lockdown happened once again, so I'm currently back to experimenting in the domestic once again. (myself and how the work started, you can cut things if you think it's too wordy)
‘Before the Fall’
Exploring the performative act for the photograph, my work encompasses the playful and random nature in the medium of photography. With an element of chance that is embodied throughout the process of the work, this gives each frame its own unique look each time the shutter is fired. The work brings to question the authenticity of the photograph and the questionable nature of the self-portrait.
If you could have your work shown anywhere, where would it be?
Living in England, I feel that it's a given that I'd love my work to be shown at Tate and the Photography Gallery.
Where do you draw inspiration from?
I'd say more of my inspiration stems mainly from photographic work but more recently I've taken an interest in painting.
Would you say Covid has forced you to explore new areas that you may never have thought about? If so has this been a positive or negative impact?
I would definitely say that Covid has focused me to look into new possibilities with my work. I feel that it brought out a side of my work that I've never explored or thought I was interested in. I'm on the downside of Covid, more recently than not, it has been affecting my motivation with my course work but creating has been helping me get through it.
Can you list a couple other creatives/friends/people you look to for inspiration?
I get a lot of inspiration from my friends in our gradshow (@opuscollective_). Some other artists that I'm really interested in and inspired by their practice are Tom Pope (@tom__pope) and Barbara Probst (@barbarprobst_studio).
