Luca Johnson

I’m a multidisciplinary illustrator who focuses on textiles, sculpture and print. My work focuses on mid-century design practices and is heavily inspired by 70’s and 80’s home design which is especially seen in my wall hangings. Instagram: @lucajohnsonart

There is a lot of energy to your painting, where does this stem from?Where would you like your work to take you?

I’m still unsure of where my work will take me, as long as I enjoy doing what I’m doing I’ll be happy but if I had a shot for an interior design company or any work for that matter in industry I’d be content.

Which part of your creative process do you enjoy most?

For me my favourite part of my creative process is the making, I love getting hands on and creating. Playing around with new materials and finding new techniques especially with my wall hangings always gets my creativity going.

Where do you draw inspiration from?

I draw a lot of inspiration from mid-century and 70’s design, the use of colour and pattern is something I am really drawn too. I’m also inspired by soviet visuals and lots of ceramics from West and East Germany, most of which inform my practice quite heavily.

What piece of music would you say compliments your work the most?

I would say Breezin’ - Live: Chicago 1976 - George Benson and Chick Corea. Everything about it from the music to the video is very me. Breezin’ is also one of my favourite compositions as well as the one done by Gábor Szabó

Can you list a couple other creatives/friends/people you look to for inspiration?

I’m inspired by many especially people on my course in Uni, Nina Fisher (@ninaf_illustration) is always inspiring as well as Bradley Jones (@Bradley.being.an.illustrator) outside of that I’m inspired by people like Henry Moore and William George Mitchell
