Julia Leister

My name Is Julia, I’m 23 years old and I’m an illustrator from Germany and am currently studying illustration. My work is hugely inspired by the things I consume like films, books, music and more. I’m especially inspired by French films from the New Wave era and right now I’m also very fascinated by the fashion and art of the 1960s and 70s.  I try to combine elements of vintage fashion and architecture, bold colour choices and hints of Japanese-aesthetic in my art 😊 I’m also a trustee of a non-profit organization called TwoBirds Art that sells artworks and donates the revenues to environmental charities.

Where would you like your work to take you?

I don’t really know where I want my work to take me, I just love the process of creating and being in the moment while doing so! But I do enjoy working with musicians and creating art for them because I’m so inspired by music myself :)

Which part of your creative process do you enjoy most?

At the moment I really enjoy the coloring process the most, like picking out a color palette and seeing how the mood changes based on what I choose!

Where do you draw inspiration from?

My inspiration mostly comes from the things I consume like movies, music, magazines, books or poems or art I see from other artists! :) I try to combine all these things when creating an artwork. For example I’m very inspired by French new wave with the mood I want my art to have, but love to give it really bold colors like what I saw in magazines from the 60s :) or I read a poem or a song lyrics that I love and try to create an illustration based on it.

What piece of music would you say compliments your work the most?

Ohh that’s such a hard question! Looking at my most recent artworks I think I’d have to go with 52 Girls by the B-52’s or Once in a Lifetime by Talking Heads :)

Can you list a couple other creatives/friends/people you look to for inspiration?

I’m very inspired by Wes Anderson, His characters, compositions and colour choices are absolutely amazing and his movies always make me want to draw! Same goes for Jean-Luc Godard, he made some of my favorite films that capture a very special mood that I often try to recreate in my art. I also love Kate Dehler, I found her on Instagram a few months ago and I’m absolutely obsessed with her retro style and warm color choices.
