Lydia Shearsmith

I’m Lydia a multidisciplinary Artist, specialising in photography, living in Hull. In 2020 I graduated from Falmouth University having studied Photography. My greatest influence is everyday objects and light. I am fascinated by altering perspectives, showing things in ways they have never been seen before, creating a visual puzzle through every image. I create my work using experimental digital and analogue approaches, stretching the photographic medium to its limits. Instagram: @lydiashearsmith_

Where would you like your work to take you?

I would like my work to direct me into a position where I can spend majority of my time creating and innovating new creative processes.

What do you look for when creating an image?

When creating an image I tend to focus on form and texture. I will explore a composition until I feel I have the perfect balance between simplicity and complexity.

Where do you draw inspiration from?

My inspiration comes from my surroundings and the way light plays within them. I also find a lot of inspiration from philosophical literature and the works of constructivist artist such as El Lissitzky and Naum Gabo.

Can you list a couple other creatives/friends/people you look to for inspiration?

In terms of creatives I look to for inspiration, there are so many I’m lucky enough to know. @Louis_stopforth for his creative approach in challenging the photographic medium. @Jake_bonnel for his incredibly inventive compositions combining analogue and digital approaches. And @Sophie_v_preston for creating self portraiture like no other.
