Madalyn Farley
I'm Madalyn (she/her), a multidisciplinary artist based in London. My work often focuses on women, finding stories from the individual to portray a wider issue. My most recent film 'Just a Mum' follows a woman’s initiation into motherhood and the struggles that come with it. You can see it here
Using a variety of media, I enjoy print making and animation which I combined in my film CHOICE. This animation highlights Malta's strict abortion laws. You can see that here.
And sometimes I like to keep it simple and illustrate food 😋

Where would you like your work to take you?
It's exciting to think that my work could take me to places I can't predict. The creative industry is so broad and although my practice is mainly illustration, I'm always learning new ways of working and creating to open myself up to even more possibilities. Whether I end up a successful freelance illustrator, creative director of an established studio or something completely different, the journey is what I look forward to the most.
Which part of your creative process do you enjoy most?
The beginning of a project is definitely my favourite part of the creative practice. Diving into research and absorbing anything and everything about your subject is energising. This is when my brain is working at 100mph, writing, drawing, photographing, getting everything onto paper and generating ideas.
Where do you draw inspiration from?
My inspiration comes from the people around me. I find individual stories can be used to communicate wider themes that are relatable and relevant, yet still feel personal and sensitive. I want my work to connect with people, evoking emotion and generating conversation.
What piece of music would you say compliments your work the most?
As my work varies, one song would be difficult to choose from to compliment it as a whole. Working with sound designer Jack Benfield on my most recent animation was a great experience as he created original music and sound design to go with my animation making it a completely unique project. This collaboration pushed a different dimension allowing the project to be the best it could.
Can you list a couple other creatives/friends/people you look to for inspiration?
Instagram has been a huge source of inspiration over lockdown as I'm constantly on my phone. Photographer Sam Youkillis (@samyoukilis) has mesmerising insta stories from all over the world, Jamie Wolfe (jamikwolfe) is one of my favourite animators of all time, creating wicked ink cell animation. Studio Moross (studiomoross) create some of the best type and design and Elaine Song's (songelain.e) animations just blow my mind 🤯
