I am a graphic designer currently in my third year of study at the Glasgow School of Art. My work is colourful and dynamic, with a keen eye for texture and detail. I particularly enjoy working on graphic design involving music, such as posters and covers. The pieces here are mainly music commissions, with designs led by the client’s ideas. I hope in future to work on more brand identity and layout work: print and magazine design in particular is an avenue I find fascinating and hope to explore further this year.

Where would you like your work to take you?

The end goal would be to become a freelance graphic designer, so I can take on whatever clients and work I desire. Working freelance would mean the opportunity to travel the world and be based wherever I please, it means the most freedom. In the meantime, I hope my work will allow me to get a job once I graduate at one of the many great design agencies across the UK, in order to gain invaluable experience in the field.

What do you look for when creating your work?

When creating my work I really aim to create something that is memorable that you’d want to take home. The ultimate compliment is someone nicking the poster you designed from a gig for sure! In terms of graphic design, you have to work pretty closely with the client as you want to achieve their vision. Recently I’ve been really trying to work on relaxing about the idea of having a ‘style’. Sure, it’s great to have a style but I’ve realised recently that it is pretty detrimental when designing for different projects. Certain visual effects work well for one project but poorly for another, and it’s better to be flexible!

Where do you draw inspiration from?

I draw inspiration from all over the place! My recent personal work tends to reference Shetland, where I grew up. The landscape, history and folklore are fascinating to me, so they get referred to frequently. For graphic design work I really try to look deep into the concept behind the design, such as the story behind the music when I work on the cover. I’ve been really working on actually researching the greats of graphic design, as who better to learn from than the best?

Can you list a couple other creatives/friends/people you look to for inspiration?

I have a great group of creative pals who inspire and support me everyday. They include: @lakotadaisyphoto, @maddstars, @_callaiw, @amyoneill_design, @mcarrdesign, @amyrob_textiles, @mouatsart ! There are plenty more, but that might end up being a long list haha.
