Cara Watson

I am an animator and illustrator based in South East London, but originally from Newcastle Upon Tyne. I graduated from Camberwell College of Arts last year with a BA in Illustration. My work focuses on playfulness and colourful characters, using mostly 2D and traditional frame-by-frame animation, both digitally and hand-drawn. I love using animation as a tool to tell stories for everyone. Instagram: @cara_watson

Where would you like your work to take you?

I love collaborating with other creatives to make animations or create stories, so I would love to continue working with amazing artists. I want to work on longer films, and have some work in a film festival, or on the tv. Who knows, Id like to try a little bit of everything!!

Which part of your creative process do you enjoy most?

I love the storyboarding and 'figuring out' stage of a project. Working out how I will transition from one scene to the next or playing with the way a certain character will move or dance. It's a kind of creative problem-solving, but with crazy characters!

Where do you draw inspiration from?

I think a lot of my inspiration comes from my own experiences My family is very creative and so art and creating was always a big part of my childhood, I think that the books I read or the stories I was told or watched still have a big impact today on my work and my inspiration. Now I think a lot of my inspiration is also influenced by being surrounded by creative friends and seeing all of the amazing things that they're working on.

What piece of music would you say compliments your work the most?

Generally, I don't use music in my work. I love using sounds to help build the environment of the video that I have either recorded myself or found on the internet somewhere. If I do ever use music, like in my graduation film, 'It's Too Soon Mr Moon', I would work with my sister @gem_watson_ as she is a brilliant musician.

Can you list a couple other creatives/friends/people you look to for inspiration?

I love my friend @fae.sharples work!  Its always filled with fab characters and amazing colours :)

I recently collaborated with @madebyhollythomas whose work I also love, it was such a joy to work with her and I'm so glad we finally did it, we've been talking about working together for so long!
